Impact of COVID-19 on global health and the Americas: challenges and projections for epidemiological control.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has a profound and multifaceted effect on global health, with particularly severe consequences in the Americas. Since its emergence in Wuhan, China, in late 2019, COVID-19 has strained health systems, exacerbated pre-existing inequalities, and demanded unprecedented epidemiological control efforts.1,2 This editorial examines the background of the disease, its specific characteristics in the Americas, the implications of its transmission, and projections for its control, based on scientific evidence published between 2020 and 2023.
